Manuscript Services
I work with narrative-driven manuscripts where structure, character, voice, and thematic cohesion are integral to the work as a whole. My approach is developmental and collaborative, focused on strengthening narrative architecture, emotional progression, pacing, character development, and overall coherence while preserving the integrity of the author’s voice and creative intent.
Editorial services are structured according to the current needs and developmental stage of the manuscript, from initial evaluation and developmental analysis through author-led revision, reassessment, and final refinement.
Editorial Evaluation
An Editorial Evaluation is a diagnostic review designed to identify the current strengths, areas of concern, and overall editorial needs of a work before deeper revision or editorial development begins.
The purpose of the evaluation is to determine what the work needs—not to provide the comprehensive analysis, detailed structural recommendations, or revision strategy of a full Developmental Edit.
Evaluation Scope
Evaluations typically focus on a selected portion of the manuscript, generally 15–25 pages. The review considers narrative direction, structural foundation, character development, clarity, voice, and areas that may warrant further editorial attention.
You will receive:
An Editorial Evaluation Report identifying key strengths and areas of concern
High-level structural, narrative, character, and developmental observations appropriate to the form
Identification of areas warranting further attention
A recommendation for the editorial approach most appropriate to the work in its current form
An Editorial Evaluation identifies and characterizes the needs of the work. Detailed developmental analysis, extensive annotation, scene-level intervention, and comprehensive revision recommendations are reserved for Developmental Editing.
Typical Range: Manuscript evaluations generally range from $200–$350.
Developmental Editing
A full-manuscript developmental review focused on structure, coherence, and overall narrative integrity. Analysis considers narrative architecture, emotional structure, scene function and progression, character development, pacing, thematic cohesion, and clarity across the work as a whole.
You will receive:
A comprehensive Developmental Edit Report
An Annotated Manuscript with detailed developmental commentary
Structural, narrative, character, and revision recommendations
This service represents a complete developmental editorial phase. Following delivery, the author undertakes revision based on the analysis and recommendations provided, either independently or with Revision Support when appropriate.
Typical Developmental Editing Range: $0.025–$0.04 per word, depending on manuscript length, complexity, stage of development, and overall editorial scope.
Revision Support
Revision Support provides structured editorial guidance during substantial author-led revision. It is designed for projects in which the author would benefit from continued developmental consultation while implementing revisions rather than completing the revision process entirely independently.
Each engagement begins with an agreed Revision Support Plan defining the revision goals, priorities, milestones, scope of editorial support, deliverables, and communication schedule. This creates a clear framework for the revision while allowing the work to evolve within the established scope.
Depending on the needs of the manuscript, Revision Support may include developmental consultation, review of designated revised chapters or sections, discussion of structural and narrative strategies, character and emotional-arc guidance, pacing and scene-function analysis, milestone review, and identification of emerging concerns as revisions are implemented.
The author remains responsible for the revision itself and retains all final creative decisions. The Editor's role is to provide developmental guidance, analysis, consultation, and revision strategy throughout the agreed engagement.
You will receive:
A customized Revision Support Plan establishing goals, priorities, milestones, scope, deliverables, and communication expectations
Scheduled editorial consultation according to the agreed Support Plan
Review of designated revised material at established milestones, where included within the scope
Revision Editorial Reports documenting milestone progress, revision effectiveness, remaining developmental considerations, and recommended next priorities, where applicable
Annotated revised material with targeted developmental commentary, where included within the agreed scope
Ongoing revision guidance and clarification within the communication parameters established for the engagement
Revision Support concludes upon completion of the agreed scope, milestones, or support period. Completion of Revision Support does not independently determine whether the work is ready for refinement. Following substantial revision, a Revised Editorial Assessment may be recommended to evaluate the work as a whole and determine the appropriate next editorial stage.
Pricing: Individually scoped according to the duration of the engagement, volume of material reviewed, number and complexity of milestones, level of editorial involvement, communication schedule, and agreed deliverables.
Revised Editorial Assessment
A Revised Editorial Assessment is conducted following substantial author revision to evaluate the manuscript in its revised form and determine its readiness for the next stage of editorial development.
Rather than assuming that completion of developmental revision means the manuscript is ready for refinement, the assessment considers how effectively earlier developmental concerns have been addressed, how successfully structural changes and new material have been integrated, and whether significant narrative, character, continuity, pacing, or other developmental concerns remain.
The assessment serves as a decision point within the editorial process. Based on the condition of the revised manuscript, the recommended next step may include additional author revision, further Developmental Editing, Revision Support, or progression to Line & Dialogue Refinement.
The purpose of the Revised Editorial Assessment is not to prescribe a predetermined next service, but to ensure that subsequent editorial work is appropriate to the actual needs and developmental readiness of the manuscript.
You will receive:
Revised Editorial Assessment Report, including:
Overview and evaluation of the completed revision
Assessment of how effectively significant developmental concerns have been addressed
Analysis of the integration of structural, character, emotional, pacing, continuity, and thematic revisions
Identification of remaining or newly emerging developmental concerns
Developmental stability and readiness assessment
Recommended next editorial stage, with rationale
Price Range: $750–$1,750
Final pricing is individually scoped based on manuscript length, complexity, extent of revision, and the comparative analysis required.
Line & Dialogue Refinement
Line & Dialogue Refinement is a direct editorial phase for manuscripts that have achieved sufficient developmental stability and are ready for focused prose- and dialogue-level refinement.
This service strengthens clarity, rhythm, voice, dialogue, sentence-level effectiveness, narrative flow, tonal continuity, and overall readability while preserving the author’s distinctive style and narrative identity. Editorial intervention focuses on how the established story is expressed and experienced on the page rather than undertaking foundational developmental reconstruction.
Refinement may address sentence structure and flow, clarity and economy of language, dialogue effectiveness and subtext, character voice, narrative voice and point-of-view consistency, tonal continuity, repetition, transitions, pacing at the prose and scene level, and the relationship between language, emotional progression, and narrative momentum.
Where appropriate, the editorial process also addresses grammar, punctuation, usage, and other mechanical concerns encountered during refinement. This service is not positioned as standalone copyediting or proofreading.
You will receive:
A manuscript with comprehensive tracked editorial changes and inline commentary where clarification or author consideration is required
Direct prose and dialogue refinement throughout the manuscript within the agreed editorial scope
A Clean Edited Manuscript reflecting the completed editorial refinement
A Final Editorial Analysis Report, documenting the refinement completed and including the Final Editorial Assessment of narrative cohesion, emotional continuity, pacing, voice consistency, manuscript readiness, remaining issues, and final recommendations
The Final Editorial Assessment evaluates the manuscript following completion of refinement and identifies any remaining considerations requiring author review. It is included as part of Line & Dialogue Refinement and is not a separate editorial service.
Line & Dialogue Refinement is appropriate for manuscripts whose foundational structure, character development, narrative progression, and other significant developmental concerns have been sufficiently resolved. When developmental stability has not yet been established, Developmental Editing, author revision, or a Revised Editorial Assessment may be recommended before refinement begins.
Pricing: Individually scoped according to manuscript length, complexity, condition of the work, and level of editorial refinement required.
Multi-Stage Editorial Engagement
Looking for continued editorial support?
For projects requiring guidance across multiple stages of development, a Multi-Stage Editorial Engagement provides a structured pathway through developmental editing, revision, reassessment, and refinement. Each stage is evaluated and scoped independently according to the evolving needs of the work.
