I provide pre-production editorial services for screenplays, approaching each work as both a narrative and cinematic form in which structure, character, emotional progression, scene function, dialogue, pacing, and visual storytelling must operate cohesively across the script as a whole.
My approach is developmental rather than formula-driven, focused on strengthening narrative architecture and cinematic execution while preserving the writer’s voice, creative intent, and the distinctive identity of the story.
Editorial services are structured according to the current needs and developmental stage of the screenplay, from initial evaluation and developmental analysis through author-led revision, reassessment, and final cinematic refinement. My work is focused on the screenplay itself and its narrative development before production; it does not extend into production or post-production editorial work.
Editorial Evaluation
An Editorial Evaluation is a diagnostic review designed to identify the current strengths, areas of concern, and overall editorial needs of a work before deeper revision or editorial development begins.
The purpose of the evaluation is to determine what the work needs—not to provide the comprehensive analysis, detailed structural recommendations, or revision strategy of a full Developmental Edit.
Evaluation Scope
Because screenplay structure depends upon the progression and relationship of the work as a whole, evaluations generally require review of the complete screenplay. The evaluation remains diagnostic rather than developmental, focusing on overall structural viability, narrative clarity, character progression, pacing, dialogue, cinematic potential, and significant areas of concern.
You will receive:
An Editorial Evaluation Report identifying key strengths and areas of concern
High-level structural, narrative, character, and developmental observations appropriate to the form
Identification of areas warranting further attention
A recommendation for the editorial approach most appropriate to the work in its current form
An Editorial Evaluation identifies and characterizes the needs of the work. Detailed developmental analysis, extensive annotation, scene-level intervention, and comprehensive revision recommendations are reserved for Developmental Editing.
Typical Range: Scoped individually based on length and complexity.
Developmental Editing
A full-screenplay developmental review focused on the structural, narrative, emotional, and cinematic foundation of the work. Analysis considers narrative architecture and story structure, character development and emotional progression, scene function, pacing and narrative momentum, dialogue effectiveness and subtext, visual storytelling, thematic cohesion, and overall cinematic clarity.
Industry-standard screenplay formatting is also considered where it materially affects readability, pacing, or the presentation of the work.
You will receive:
A comprehensive Developmental Edit Report outlining the screenplay’s strengths, developmental concerns, analysis, and revision recommendations
An Annotated Screenplay with detailed developmental commentary
Structural, narrative, character, scene, and revision recommendations
This service represents a complete developmental editorial phase. Following delivery, the author undertakes revision based on the analysis and recommendations provided, either independently or with Revision Support when appropriate.
Typical Developmental Editing Range: $1,500–$4,000 for a feature-length screenplay, depending on scope, structural complexity, stage of development, and overall editorial needs.
Revision Support
Revision Support provides structured editorial guidance during substantial author-led revision. It is designed for projects in which the author would benefit from continued developmental consultation while implementing revisions rather than completing the revision process entirely independently.
Each engagement begins with an agreed Revision Support Plan defining the revision goals, priorities, milestones, scope of editorial support, deliverables, and communication schedule. This creates a clear framework for the revision while allowing the work to evolve within the established scope.
Depending on the needs of the screenplay, Revision Support may include developmental consultation, review of designated revised scenes or sequences, discussion of structural and cinematic strategies, character and emotional-arc guidance, scene function, pacing and dialogue considerations, milestone review, and identification of emerging concerns as revisions are implemented.
The author remains responsible for the revision itself and retains all final creative decisions. The Editor's role is to provide developmental guidance, analysis, consultation, and revision strategy throughout the agreed engagement.
You will receive:
A customized Revision Support Plan establishing goals, priorities, milestones, scope, deliverables, and communication expectations
Scheduled editorial consultation according to the agreed Support Plan
Review of designated revised material at established milestones, where included within the scope
Revision Editorial Reports documenting milestone progress, revision effectiveness, remaining developmental considerations, and recommended next priorities, where applicable
Annotated revised material with targeted developmental commentary, where included within the agreed scope
Ongoing revision guidance and clarification within the communication parameters established for the engagement
Revision Support concludes upon completion of the agreed scope, milestones, or support period. Completion of Revision Support does not independently determine whether the work is ready for refinement. Following substantial revision, a Revised Editorial Assessment may be recommended to evaluate the work as a whole and determine the appropriate next editorial stage.
Pricing: Individually scoped according to the duration of the engagement, volume of material reviewed, number and complexity of milestones, level of editorial involvement, communication schedule, and agreed deliverables.
Revised Editorial Assessment
A Revised Editorial Assessment is conducted following substantial author revision to evaluate the screenplay in its revised form and determine its readiness for the next stage of editorial development.
Rather than assuming that completion of developmental revision means the screenplay is ready for refinement, the assessment considers how effectively earlier developmental concerns have been addressed, how successfully structural, character, scene, and cinematic revisions have been integrated, and whether significant narrative, emotional, pacing, continuity, dialogue, or visual storytelling concerns remain.
The assessment serves as a decision point within the editorial process. Based on the condition of the revised screenplay, the recommended next step may include additional author revision, further Developmental Editing, Revision Support, or progression to Scene & Dialogue Refinement.
The purpose of the Revised Editorial Assessment is not to prescribe a predetermined next service, but to ensure that subsequent editorial work is appropriate to the actual needs and developmental readiness of the screenplay.

Scene & Dialogue Refinement
Scene & Dialogue Refinement is a direct editorial phase for screenplays that have achieved sufficient developmental stability and are ready for focused scene-, dialogue-, and line-level cinematic refinement.
This service strengthens scene execution, dialogue effectiveness, character voice, subtext, pacing, visual clarity, action-line economy, tonal continuity, screenplay flow, and overall cinematic readability while preserving the writer’s narrative intent and distinctive voice. Editorial intervention focuses on how the established story functions and is experienced on the page rather than undertaking foundational developmental reconstruction.
Refinement may address scene construction and progression, dialogue rhythm and economy, character voice and distinction, exposition, subtext and emotional clarity, scene-level pacing, transitions, action-line clarity, visual compression, sentence-level readability, tonal consistency, and the relationship between dialogue, action, and cinematic momentum.
Where appropriate, the editorial process also addresses formatting, grammar, punctuation, and other mechanical concerns encountered during refinement. This service is not positioned as standalone screenplay formatting, copyediting, or proofreading.
You will receive:
An Annotated Screenplay with comprehensive tracked editorial changes and inline commentary where clarification or author consideration is required
Direct scene, dialogue, action-line, and cinematic refinement throughout the screenplay within the agreed editorial scope
A Clean Edited Screenplay reflecting the completed editorial refinement
A Final Editorial Analysis Report, documenting the refinement completed and including the Final Editorial Assessment of narrative cohesion, emotional continuity, pacing and cinematic momentum, dialogue effectiveness, visual storytelling and screen readability, overall editorial condition, remaining issues, and final recommendations
The Final Editorial Assessment evaluates the screenplay following completion of refinement and identifies any remaining considerations requiring author review. For screenplays completing a multi-stage engagement, it also marks the conclusion of the pre-production editorial process and assesses the work in its final editorial condition. It is included as part of Scene & Dialogue Refinement and is not a separate editorial service.
Scene & Dialogue Refinement is appropriate for screenplays whose foundational structure, character development, narrative progression, and other significant developmental concerns have been sufficiently resolved. When developmental stability has not yet been established, Developmental Editing, author revision, or a Revised Editorial Assessment may be recommended before refinement begins.
Typical Range: $1,000–$2,500 per screenplay, depending on length, complexity, condition of the work, and level of editorial refinement required.
Multi-Stage Editorial Engagement
For screenplays requiring guidance across multiple stages of pre-production development, a Multi-Stage Editorial Engagement provides a structured pathway through developmental editing, author-led revision, reassessment, and final cinematic refinement. Each stage is evaluated and scoped independently according to the evolving needs of the screenplay, allowing the editorial process to continue only where further involvement provides meaningful value.
